The slightly arching, shiny green, slender leaves forms a dense clump from which slim stems are topped with fluffy heads of purple tinted, soft brown flowers that create fluffy plumes. Later the leaves gain hints of yellow in autumn. The foliage dies back in late autumn.

Hardy to -10 degrees and more, the leaves remain throughout the year with new ones replacing older leaves in spring. Like most grasses, this will take a few years to reach maturity. Cut the tops back before the leaves start to emerge again, in late winter or early spring.
