Crambe cordifolia
(Sea kale)
Walk into a garden where this handsome plant is growing and it is not the immense size that strikes you, it's the scent. This produces enormous, airy sprays of tiny white flowers, almost like a giant Gypsophila, which exude a strong fragrance of honey. Underneath, the large, rough, dark green leaves form a good mound.

Hardy to -10 degrees or more, the foliage dies back in autumn and slowly emerges again in spring. Cut back the old leaves before new ones spring up. Easy to grow as long as the ground does not stay wet, I've found they establish well in a light, sandy soil, but can be moody when grown in a heavy soil. Cut back flower stems when the flowers have finished.
