Darmera peltata

(Umbrella plant)

An unusual plant that bears its flowers way before the leaves emerge. Flat, broad heads of tiny, pink flowers are carried on upright, sturdy, hairy stems. Some weeks later, shiny, round, mid-green leaves with handsomely scalloped edges appear. This is useful for the edges of boggy areas or streams where its rhizomous roots will gently spread.
