Iris 'Shaker's Prayer'

(Siberian iris)

The fine, mid-green leaves form a dense clump and an attractive base to the rich blue flowers that are held well above the foliage on slender stems. Each of the 3 or 4 blooms that the stem produces round falls. These are handsomely lined with white and have a gold spot near the tops. The flaring, slender standards are violet-blue. Bloom from early to mid June.

Siberian irises are tolerant of a wider range of soils than Bearded irises, but they do prefer a moist soil. However, if the soil drains well during the summer, the trick is to make sure they do not dry out when they are first planted. Very hardy to -10 degrees or more, the leaves die back in autumn and emerge again in spring. Remove old foliage before new leaves start to grow. Does not need frequent division like bearded irises.
