Peony 'May Lilac'

At first the large, lightly ruffled petals open into a soft lilac-pink goblet. At the base of the petals a faint flush of deep pink is apparent. As the petals age into a wide cup, they fade rapidly to palest pink, but a dark flush remains at the bottom of each. A dense ring of fine gold stamens sits around the furry, soft-pink carpels, which have large red tips. The attractive leaves are very large, fairly round, shiny and light green.

Peonies will grow in most soils as long as they are not wet, including clay soils. They require a sunny or partially shaded site. Herbaceous peonies need to be planted with the eye (the dormant pink buds) no more than 2.5cm below the surface of the soil. Do not mix manure in the soil before planting as this may rot the eyes.
