Peony 'Madame Emile Debatene'

When first open the deep-pink blooms form a flat, rose-shaped flower filled with evenly sized petals. As the flower ages the bright-pink petals, which have lightly pinked edges, loosen enough to show the centre of small petals as well as the cluster of golden stamens within. Long, slender, red stems bear one or two side branches and mid-green foliage.

Peonies will grow in most soils as long as they are not wet, including clay soils. They require a sunny or partially shaded site. Herbaceous peonies need to be planted with the eye (the dormant pink buds) no more than 2.5cm below the surface of the soil. Do not mix manure in the soil before planting as this may rot the eyes.
