This lovely shaped, lightly scented flower opens into a flat dome of dark pink. The petals are neatly interlaced petals and fade along the edges. They are cupped in the middle around a small cluster of golden stamens and as the flower ages the petals loosen to reveal a few little petals right in the middle. This is registered as a Hybrid peony, probably because of its semi-glossy, deep green leaves, but in appearance it is more like a lactiflora peony.

Peonies will grow in most soils as long as they are not wet, including clay soils. They require a sunny or partially shaded site. Herbaceous peonies need to be planted with the eye (the dormant pink buds) no more than 2.5cm below the surface of the soil. Do not mix manure in the soil before planting as this may rot the eyes.
