Verbena rigida

(Slender vervain)

A short plant with rigid, well-branched stems carrying small clusters of purple flowers. Sparsely leaved, pretty but can be tender in hard frosts but fine with us in the border. Probably best grown in a pot with other plants. Despite it being known to be short-lived and tender, I have found it has emerged after every winter for the past 3 years!

Not the hardiest of perennials, this copes with temperatures down to -5. I've found it to be perennial in my garden, popping us when I didn't expect to. The tops die right back in autumn and grow again in spring. Easy to establish in the right conditions.
